How to record your screen in Windows PC

Recording a screen means taking a screenshot. It’s not the screenshot of print screen but you can create screen shot recordings of up to 15 minutes with your camera and microphone without any additional software or apps.

To record your screen select Create > Record screen in Microsoft Stream

When prompted by your browser, select Allow Microsoft Stream to use your camera and microphone.

If you select Block, your camera and microphone will be disabled. To enable them, click lock icon in your browser’s address bar and select Allow next to the appropriate device.

Select the Webcam icon or Microphone icon to set up your camera and microphone. If you’re using a USB camera or microphone, make sure it’s plugged in and select it from the menu. You can also turn off your camera and microphone if you don’t wish to include them in your recording.

You’re now ready to start recording!

Select which camera and microphone you want to use. The illustrations in each dropdown list will update when you choose your preferred camera and microphone.

Remember that if you have elected to share audio, the microphone will pick up any sounds or background noise, such as typing. If you have elected to share your camera, the webcam will pick up any physical movement, even when you’ve minimized the recording.

Select the Record button to start recording.

Select which content from your screen you wish to share—your entire screen, an application window, or browser tab—then click Share. To include audio from your computer in the recording, select the checkbox Share audio.

If you’re using macOS Catalina, you may need to set up screen recording permissions in System Preferences. Wait until the countdown for the recording to begin.

Once you begin, the timer will show the time limit.

You can now switch to the application or window you wish to record.

When you’re finished recording, or if you want to take a break, switch back to the Microsoft Stream screen recorder tab in your browser. If you need to do other work while recording, switch to another window. If you need to take any action during the recording, you need to come back to the screen you’re recording.

Select the Pause icon  to pause recording the screen, audio, and camera at any time. Select the Play icon to Resume.

When you’re finished, select Next to review your recording.

To review the recording: On this page, select the Play button  to review the recording. Select Record again if you’re not satisfied and want to try again.

When you’re satisfied with your recording, select Upload to Stream to continue to the next step.

Also if you want to trim the video, you can do so after uploading and processing the recording.

How to upload screen recording?

After you’ve recorded the screen, you will have a file to do with what you like. Upload it to a favorite Stream channel or email it to a co-worker.

  • On the Upload to Stream page, your video will start uploading to Stream. While you wait, you can:
  • Monitor the uploading progress
  • Fill in the video name, description, and language in the details section
  • When published, everyone in your company will have permission to view your video. To make the video visible only to yourself, deselect this checkbox: Allow everyone in your company to watch this video
  • To set custom permissions, groups, channels, and other options, click Update video details

After the upload is complete, you can either publish or save, as follows:

a. Click Publish. Your video is now ready! Select Go to Video to go to the video page on Stream and watch or share your video. After processing is complete, you can also trim your video by selecting the More actions menu , then click Trim video.

b. Click Save as draft if you’re not yet ready to publish your video. Your video will be saved to My Content > Videos in Stream, from where you can publish it at any time.

On Windows 10, you can record your screen using the built-in tool – Game Bar. It was designed essentially to capture PC and Xbox gaming sessions, but it can also be used to record other apps and activities. 

First, enable Game Mode on your system:

To check the maximum duration of how long a screen recording can be, head over to Game Bar’s settings. Click on the Start menu and hit Settings. Click on Gaming. Under Captures will be the option for Background Recording. Select from the maximum recording time drop-down from 30 minutes to 4 hours.

Now you’re all set to record your screen. Windows 10 Game Bar can only support screen recording of one application at a time. This means, you can’t switch to recording another window or ALT + TAB your way after you’ve started recording. Also note that you cannot record your Desktop or File Explorer or Maps. 

With that, let’s get down to the steps you can use to record your screen using the Game Bar.

Step 1: Open the app you want to record. Close other windows and make sure there’s no unwanted audio that will sneak its way into your recording.

Step 2: Press the Windows + G on your keyboard. This should open up the Game Bar.

In the ‘Capture’ window, click on the Camera icon to take a screenshot. To start recording your screen, click on the circle with the dot (or press Windows + Alt + R).

Once you start recording, a capture status with a timer, recording controls and a microphone will appear. The mic is to switch on and off external sounds to record commentary. Internal sounds will be recorded by default.

Click on the stop button or press Windows + Alt + R again to stop recording.

A pop up will appear on the right side saying ‘Game clip recorded’. Click on the pop-up to see that your screen recording is saved in the ‘Captures’ folder in File Explorer.

Step 2: Once the camera is opened, there are options on the right to choose from, photo or video mode. The app will allow you to record a maximum of three hours.  

Step 3: Once you have finished recording your video, they are saved by default to the Camera Roll folder. 

If you’re using a PC to record videos without an in-built camera, you will need to connect a webcam to your PC.
